Adhesive Stops for the Damon System
Putting stops on the archwires is a critical step ensuring efficient
tooth movement in the Damon System. Traditionally, crimpable stops have
been used to prevent the archwires from sliding side to side causing
a wire poke out the posterior tubes of the molars. Because there is a
tendency to deform the archwire when crimping the stop on the archwire,
some clinicians use light-cured composites (Revolution
by Kerr) applied
to the archwire.
Here is how Dr. Stuart Frost in Mesa Arizona uses light-cured composite
to make his archwire stops:
- Because friction and binding have been largely eliminated
from the Damon System, all archwires need stop, even the .019 x .025
Stainless Steel.
- Make sure the wire is dry in the area where you are going
to place the stop. IF THE WIRE IS WET THE STOP WILL NOT STICK.
- Put a small dimple of adhesive on the wire. You can use
a plastic spatula to apply the adhesive. The will help control the
amount of adhesive you use. Remember you do not need very much.
- Using a small cotton tip applicator, apply a small amount
of Ortho-Solo to the cotton and adapt the adhesive fully around the
archwire.
- Cure the adhesive for 5 to 10 seconds
IT IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT TO APPLY THE STOP ANTERIOR TO THE CROWDING.
THIS WILL ALLOW THE WIRE TO FULLY EXPRESS AS THE CASE UNRAVELES.

| Notice how the stops have been placed anterior to the
crowding. Placing the stops on either side of the centrals is a often
indicated. Two stops can be applied if desired. |
